PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - Tomas Klempa's sixth-round shootout goal proved to be the game-winner as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees took the first of three consecutive games against the Arizona Sundogs by a 5-4 final on Friday night at Tim's Toyota Center.
With the win the Bees (12-12-4) extend their fifth place lead over Arizona (9-15-5) in the Central Hockey League's Berry Conference.
Luke Erickson scored a pair of power play goals in the third period for the Sundogs including the game-tying marker at 4-4 with 3:20 to play. Phillip Ischi and Aaron Boogaard also scored for the Bees in the third.
Both teams traded goals in period one as the Bees took an early lead just 47 seconds into the contest from Craig Lineker's shot from the point. Adam Smyth responded for Arizona less than a minute later on a wrist shot from between the circles to knot the game at 1-1 and extend his point streak to five games. The Bees jumped back out in front with a Zak Pearson tally, but the Sundogs would tie the game again on JP Chabot's 10th of the season for a power play goal midway through the frame.
The Sundogs finished 3-for-5 on the power play, tying a season-high with three power play goals in the game. Rio Grande Valley was 0-for-2.
Wylie Rogers picked up the win for the Bees with 42 saves. Scott Reid took the loss for Arizona stopping 32.
Zachary Carriveau made his debut for the Sundogs after being traded from the Missouri Mavericks earlier in the week. Daymen Rycroft returned to action for Arizona as well for the first time since November 9th after being out with an injury.
Jeff Hazelwood had a three-point night for the Sundogs in the loss.
The Sundogs and Killer Bees close out 2011 on Saturday with a New Year's Eve tilt at Tim's Toyota Center. Game time is set for 7:05 PM MST.
