Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. -Steven Whitney's natural hat trick and a relentless team effort buried the Manchester Monarchs Friday night at Scope Arena. A well-rounded team effort where 10 of 16 Admirals registered a point tarnished the Manchester throne.

At 15:04 of the first period, Ben Betker set the pace that the Admirals would follow for the remainder of the game. After shooting the puck from the high slot, he chased down his own rebound and muscled the puck up and over Manchester goalie, Doug Carr, lifting the Admirals to a 1-0 lead.

Momentum from the first period carried over into the second, and Norfolk's first line, led by Michael Pelech and Steven Whitney, dominated the second frame. Steven Whitney grabbed his 15th goal of the season just 1:32 into the period. Following Betker's lead from the first, Whitney set up shop in front of Carr and capitalized on the rebound from a Scott Allen shot, doubling the Admirals lead, 2-0.

Just over five minutes later, Whitney collected the rebound from an errant Michael Pelech shot and wristed a laser into a wide-open net, notching his second goal of the game at 6:57.

Pelech and Whitney would make it a 4-0 lead in the waning minutes of the second period. As Whitney patiently waited near the right post, Pelech timed his pass perfectly, sending it through the crease. Whitney took advantage and tipped it in glove side at 15:22.

Not to be outdone, Greg Chase and Braden Christoffer wanted to share in the glory. Scoring just 1:22 apart, they added goals of their own, lifting the Admirals to a 6-0 lead early in the third. Manchester then relieved Carr of his net-minding duties and let Colin Stevens finish out the game.

Only a single goal sneaked past Nic Riopel, and it was while the Admirals were on the man advantage. Newly signed Ryan Patsch took advantage of a turnover in the neutral zone, and his unassisted, short-handed goal at 8:08 of the third was the final marker of the game.

Riopel stopped 31 of 32 shots, and the Admirals were 1-for-4 on the power play. The Admirals return to home ice Saturday night for a rematch against the Monarchs.
