Manchester Monarchs News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Manchester Monarchs couldn't overcome a natural hat-trick from Steven Whitney, falling to the Norfolk Admirals, 6-1, Friday night at Scope Arena.
The Monarchs (34-16-1-4) fell for the first time in regulation to the Admirals (23-28-2-1) this season.
The Admirals got on the board first when Ben Betker scored his 3rd goal of the season at 15:04 of the opening period. Betker took an initial shot on Monarchs goaltender, Doug Carr, but the shot was blocked right back to his stick, and Betker made the second chance count, beating Carr for the 1-0 Norfolk lead.
Steven Whitney extended the Norfolk lead at 1:32 of the second period, netting his 15th goal of the season and 5th goal against the Monarchs this season. Whitney was camped in front of Carr and found the loose change from a Scott Allen shot to put the Admirals up, 2-0.
Whitney made it 3-0 Admirals with his second goal of the night at 6:57 of the second period. Whitney found a loose puck in the Monarchs zone off of a shot by Michael Pelech, and sent the puck into a yawning cage from the left face-off circle.
Whitney notched the natural hat-trick at 15:22 of the middle period to put the Admirals up, 4-0. Whitney took a pass from Pelech from the left circle, tipping home his 3rd goal of the night.
Norfolk didn't let up to begin the third period, as Greg Chase scored his 14th goal of the season at 2:45 of the final frame. Chase took a pass from Betker and beat Carr on the power play for the 5-0 Admirals lead.
Braden Christoffer made it 6-0 at 4:07 of the third period when he scored his 4th goal of the season. Christoffer went in on Carr on a 2-on-1, but kept the puck and roofed a shot over the Monarchs goalie.
Newcomer, Ryan Patsch, wouldn't let the Monarchs get shutout, as he scored his 1st goal of the season at 8:08, a short-handed goal. Patsch stole the puck at center and with a defender draped all over him, sent the puck home, top shelf, past Admirals goaltender, Nic Riopel, but that is as close as the Monarchs would get.
The Monarchs are back on the ice tomorrow night, Feb. 27 (7:15 p.m.) when they finish their two-game set with the Admirals from Scope Arena. The Monarchs return home Friday, Mar. 4 (7 p.m.) to play the Orlando Solar Bears and will collecting clothes for the Goodwill Clothing Drive. The Monarchs will also host their annual American Pride Night on Saturday, Mar. 5 (7 p.m.) against Orlando. Prior to the game, the Boston Bruins Alumni will play a game against local service women and men and the first 4,000 fans in the building will receive Red, White and Blue mini-sticks courtesy of NH1 and Monkey Sports.
