Walleye Reel in Win over Beast
February 26, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release
TOLEDO, OHIO - The Brampton Beast opened the game with a great defensive first period but the hometown Toledo Walleye chipped away at the armour in the second period and netted four consecutive goals in the second frame alone, en route to a 6-1 win over the Beast at the Huntington Center in Toledo on Friday night.
Nick McParland scored the lone Beast goal late in the second frame and Beast starting goaltender Kenny Reiter made 20 saves as the Beast's winless skid extends to six games.
The Beast played an excellent defensive first period, confidently breaking up several odd-man rushes and great scoring chances. After starting the game with several big saves, the Walleye were finally able to beat Kenny Reiter in the final minute of the opening period as Josh Shalla sent a puck on goal from the point. It saw its way through a crowd and beat Reiter low for his 11th goal of the year at 19:17.
The Walleye roared out of the gate in the second period and didn't wait long to make it 2-0. With the Beast killing a penalty to start the period, a shot from the point ricocheted off a Beast player's shin pads and took an unlucky bounce right onto the stick of Shane Berschbach, who netted his 21st of the year just 40 seconds into the period.
The Walleye kept on rolling in the second period and Zach Nastasiuk made it 3-0 with a nice deke on a partial breakaway at 5:25.
A.J. Jenks banged in a rebound on the power play to extend the Toledo lead at 12:23.
Austin Wuthrich completed an end-to-end rush for his 12th goal of the season less than a minute later, giving the Walleye a 5-0 edge.
Nick McParland got the Beast on the board late in the second period as he took a pass from newcomer Mike Hammond at the top of the circle and snapped a perfect shot over the glove hand of Toledo starting goaltender Jake Paterson for his fifth goal of the year with 3:48 remaining in the second period.
The Walleye struck again with 13:01 remaining in the game as Shalla picked up his second goal of the game, walking out of the corner and beating Reiter on the power play at 6:59.
The Beast continued to press until the final buzzer and outshot the Walleye 8-4 in the final frame, but Paterson stood tall and stopped all but one of the 20 shots he faced to earn the win for Toledo.
