West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps downed the Dayton Dragons 2-1 in game one of a doubleheader before having their second game suspended prior to the sixth inning due to curfew Friday night at LMCU Ballpark.
Whitecaps starter Beau Brieske (4-2) headlined the first game, striking out seven Dragons hitters through 5.2 innings to earn his fourth victory after nearly a two-hour rain delay. The second game becomes the first time the Whitecaps have had play suspended due to curfew since a 9-9 tie with the Peoria Chiefs in a game that lasted six hours and 16 innings on July 22, 2016.
Daniel Cabrera scored Eric De La Rosa on an RBI-double to open the action before Bryant Packard lifted a sacrifice fly an inning later to make it a 2-0 Whitecaps lead. Quinn Cotton notched the only run for the Dragons in the sixth before 'Caps closer Jared Tobey slammed the door going 1.1 innings while striking out a pair in his first save on the season.
Dayton jumped out to a big lead in game two, plating five runs in the first inning - highlighted by a three-run homer from James Free - before the Whitecaps crossed two runners in the bottom half to trim the lead to 5-2. Both teams added a pair of tallies through the next four innings, making it 7-4 before play was halted due to the inability to start a new inning past 12:50 am local time, leading to the curfew-initiation suspension of play.
The 'Caps and Dragons will continue to play in the top of the sixth inning beginning at 6:05 on Saturday before playing their regularly scheduled nine-inning contest afterward.
