Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - Dylan Rosa's triple in the top of the ninth broke a scoreless tie, leading to a 2-0 victory for the West Michigan Whitecaps over the Great Lakes Loons on Friday at Dow Diamond. West Michigan's two-run edge secured the series win.
The Loons (15-26) got a superb pitching performance from starter Alfredo Tavarez. He tossed 7.0 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just three hits and one walk. The 20-year-old right-hander struck out four hitters.
On the other side the Whitecaps (20-20) countered with Brad Bass, and he was even better. The seventh-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers last year only allowed three base runners over 7.0 innings - one from a hit and two from a walk - and struck out five. Friday's appearance was the first time Bass went deeper than 5.0 innings and did not allow a run.
Loons reliever Mark Washington (L, 0-1) made his Single-A debut after being called up from the Rookie-level Ogden Raptors earlier in the day. The 6-foot-7 right-hander allowed the RBI-triple to Rosa before a sacrifice fly by Jordan Pearce made it a 2-0 lead for the Whitecaps.
Prior to joining the Loons, Washington had a 2-0 record with a 3.32 ERA in 21.2 innings pitched for the Raptors.
After pitching a clean bottom of the eighth, Clate Schmidt (W, 8-2) got into trouble in the ninth against the Loons. He walked Deacon Liput and gave up a single to Jacob Amaya, putting runners on the corners.
Former Loons manager Lance Parish pulled Schmidt from the game for Billy Lescher. He went on to retire Drew Avans via a pop out and got Devin Mann to bounce into a double play, ending the game.
The Loons remain at Dow Diamond on Saturday to start a three-game series against the Lake County Captains.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
