Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - Fort Wayne starting pitcher Osvaldo Hernandez did not allow a hit until the seventh inning as the TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-2 on Friday night. Fort Wayne's victory allowed them to win the series, two-games-to-one.
Fort Wayne built a 3-0 lead before Dayton's Alejo Lopez looped a single to right field to start the Dragons half of the seventh inning. Lopez went to third base when Jonathan India followed with a double to the left field fence, and Andy Sugilio's infield ground out brought in Lopez to make it 3-1. With two outs, Leandro Santana doubled off the right field fence to score India and make it 3-2.
But Fort Wayne immediately answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to rebuild their lead to three runs at 5-2. The Dragons picked up only one more hit, a ninth inning bunt single by Lopez.
Dragons starting pitcher Mac Sceroler pitched well over his first five innings, allowing only a solo home run to Gabriel Arias in the fourth. Sceroler gave up a two-out, two-run single in the sixth that allowed Fort Wayne to extend their lead to 3-0. Sceroler finished with five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Reliever Cory Thompson replaced Sceroler with two outs in the sixth and finished the inning. But Thompson was charged with two runs in the seventh as he threw wild pitches in the inning and gave up three hits. Brian Hunter worked the final inning and two-thirds.
The Dragons finished with only four hits in the game after collecting 64 over the previous five games. Alejo Lopez was 2 for 4 to lead the way, extending his hitting streak to seven straight games.
Notes: The Reds announced on Friday afternoon that pitching prospect Hunter Greene is suffering from an ulnar collateral ligament sprain in his right elbow and will not pitch for the Dragons again this season. Greene will go to Arizona for injury rehabilitation.
In the Standings: The Dragons dropped to 19-22 in the second half. They fell one-half game behind Fort Wayne in the Midwest League's East Division Second Half wildcard race (#2 seed). There are 29 games to play.
Up Next: The Dragons open new three-game series in Grand Rapids, Michigan against the West Michigan Whitecaps (20-20) on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Patrick McGuff (1-2, 2.66) will start for the Dragons against West Michigan's Tom de Blok (1-2, 3.46).
