Bass, the former Notre Dame standout, picked up where he left off only allowing one hit while striking out five Loons hitters and while holding Great Lakes scoreless through seven innings. Meanwhile, Loons starter Alfredo Tavarez matched Bass pitch-for-pitch dealing seven innings of without allowing a run while striking out four "Caps hitters.
West Michigan threatened in the sixth with men on first and second with none out, but Tavarez retired Clemens, Deatherage, and Rivera to stall the threat. The "Caps bats came alive in the ninth posting two runs featuring a Dylan Rosa RBI-triple driving home Rey Rivera to break a scoreless tie and give the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead.
