Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
PEORIA, ILL. - The Peoria Chiefs defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-1, Friday to secure a three-game sweep at Dozer Park. Johan Oviedo notched seven strikeouts over seven innings and earned his fifth consecutive victory for Peoria (25-14, 64-45). Ryan Jeffers led Cedar Rapids (27-14, 59-51) by going 2-of-2 with two walks and an RBI double to continue a strong start to the week.
The Chiefs scored in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 2-0 lead. Yariel Gonzalez drew a one-out walk during the fourth before Zach Kirtley was hit by a pitch. Dennis Ortega followed with an RBI single to put Peoria on the scoreboard. Three consecutive singles to start the fifth from Rayder Ascanio, Wood Myers, and Luken Baker produced the Chiefs' second run.
Jeffers trimmed the Kernels' deficit to 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning. With one out and Jose Miranda at third base, Jeffers doubled to left-center field and broke up the shutout. He is batting .579 (11-of-19) over his first five games this week including seven extra-base hits.
During the bottom of the sixth, Peoria answered with three runs for a 5-1 advantage. Kirtley hit a leadoff single and scored on Ortega's RBI double. Two batters later, Brandon Benson lifted a two-run home run over the left-field wall.
Oviedo (8-7) recorded his longest outing of the season while keeping the Kernels' offense quiet in seven innings of work. He allowed just five hits and two walks within his fourth quality start during his five-game win streak.
Blayne Enlow (2-4) yielded five runs over 5.1 innings and was charged with the loss. Also in Friday's finale, Michael Davis started all of Cedar Rapids' season-high-tying three double plays featuring an unassisted double play that ended the fifth inning.
Coming up, the Kernels return to Cedar Rapids to start a three-game series with the Beloit Snappers. Saturday's series opener is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and Kernels right-hander Jordan Balazovic (5-2, 3.74) will start against Snappers left-hander Ivan Andueza (1-8, 5.27).
