Cubs Snap Eight Game Skid in Series Finale Win over Lansing

August 3, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release

Lansing, MI: For the first time since July 25, the South Bend Cubs will leave the ballpark with the taste of victory. In an extra inning thriller against the Lansing Lugnuts in the series finale, South Bend edged the Lugnuts 5-4 to snap an eight game losing streak.

From an offensive perspective the entire game, the Cubs were quiet until the late innings. After six innings of play, both South Bend and Lansing were scoreless. That was until the top of the 7th. With a pair of runs, the Cubs took the 2-0 lead heading into stretch time from Cooley Law School Stadium.

The lead would double just an inning later. With his first home run as a South Bend Cub, Jimmy Herron picked up his first two RBI of the night in the top of the 8th thanks to a big fly out of the ballpark. The game was quickly slipping away from the Lugnuts as the Cubs took the commanding 4-0 lead.

Heading to the bottom of the 9th up four runs, trusty right hander Jake Steffens came to the mound looking to put the game away. Steffens, who possessed an ERA under 1.20 coming into tonight's game, surrendered four runs to Lansing as they tied the game at 4-4.

The last time the Cubs won, it was a walk-off victory at Four Winds Field over these same Lansing Lugnuts. In extra innings, South Bend summoned up the same late inning grit as eight days ago and were able to top the Lugnuts.

Thanks to Herron's third RBI of the day on an infield hit scoring Clayton Daniel, South Bend reclaimed the lead 5-4 heading to the bottom of the 10th. This time on the mound, it was closer Brian Glowicki's turn.

Glowicki shut the door and sent down Lansing to pick up South Bend's 52nd overall win this season. Their record is now back in the right direction at 52-58 overall. Now that the series in Lansing has wrapped up, the Cubs will head south to Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Against the Hot Rods, South Bend will play a three game series in Bowling Green before heading home. On the 10-game road trip thus far, the Cubs are 1-6. First pitch from Bowling Green Ballpark tomorrow night is set for 7:35 PM.
