Captains Swept After Sloppy Loss

Lake County Captains News Release

(Eastlake, OH) - A shaky defensive performance led to a rough day at the office for the Lake County Captains (17-23, 46-64) on Friday night. The Captains committed five errors, en route to their fifth straight loss, as the Bowling Green Hot Rods (25-16, 72-38) completed a three-game sweep with an 8-4 victory at Classic Park.

Bowling Green scored in the first inning for the third straight game. Taylor Walls led off the game by lining 0-2 pitch from Francisco Perez off the right field fence for a double and Jim Haley followed by hitting a high bouncer that hopped over third baseman Elvis Perez and landed in left for an RBI single. The Hot Rods led 1-0 just two batters into the ballgame. They scored in the first three batters of the game in each contest this series.

The Captains rebounded to take the lead in the second when the Hot Rods had some sloppy defense of their own. Will Benson reached with one out when Tobias Myers hit him with a 2-2 pitch. After Jonathan Laureano flied to center for the second out, Jose Medina hit a line drive to right field and Emilio Gustave misplayed the ball. The right fielder raced in and the ball clipped off of his glove and rolled to the wall. Benson scored the tying run and Medina hustled to third on the three-base error. Miguel Eladio then gave the Captains the lead. He chopped an infield single behind second base that allowed Medina to score the go-ahead run. After Perez singled, Gabriel Mejia hit a bouncer to shortstop that kicked off of Walls' glove for an error. Eladio scored to give the Captains a 3-1 lead.

Two Captains errors, a balk and a close play at the plate in the fourth helped Bowling Green take the lead back. Eladio began the inning by making back-to-back errors at shortstop, allowing Zach Rutherford and Devin Davis to reach. Gustave then dropped down a bunt to move the runners to second and third. Trey Hair came up next and hit a hard grounder back to the mound. Francisco Perez made the stop, saw Rutherford off the bag at third and threw to Elvis Perez. The throw pulled the third baseman into foul territory, but he still got off a strong throw to the plate. Laureano made the tag on the sliding Rutherford, but the runner was called safe. Captains manager Luke Carlin came out to argue and home plate umpire Jen Pawol ejected him from the game. It was the first time this year that the Captains' skipper had been tossed.

The fourth inning continued with the Captains still ahead, but only by one run. With runners on the corners and just one out, Perez balked, allowing Davis to come home from third with the tying run. Hair moved to second on the play. After Walls grounded out to shortstop, Haley roped a double down the left field line that plated Hair with the go-ahead run to give the Hot Rods a 4-3 lead.

Bowling Green added three more runs in the fifth. Perez started the inning, but Hernandez singled, Gomez singled and Rutherford dropped down a bunt and reached with another single to load the bases with nobody out. Adam Scott came in from the bullpen to make his Captains debut and promptly got the first out, but it was a sacrifice fly to center by Davis that brought home Hernandez. Gustave came up next and hit a soft grounder to second base. Jesse Berardi fielded and flipped to Eladio at second to force out Rutherford, but Gomez scored on the fielder's choice. Hair then produced an RBI double to bring home Gustave and extend the Hot Rods' lead to 7-3.

After the Hot Rods tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Gustave, the Captains rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Lake County loaded the bases against right-hander Jhonleider Salinas on a leadoff single by Laureano and back-to-back walks to Medina and Eladio. Salinas was able to escape, however. After he struck out Perez looking, Mejia hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Laureano and Berardi popped up the first pitch to second base to end the game.

Myers (10-5) earned the win for the Hot Rods. The right-hander pitched seven innings and allowed three unearned runs on five hits. Myers struck out four, hit one batter and did not issue a walk.

Perez (8-8) took the loss. The lefty pitched four innings and surrendered seven runs - four earned - on eight hits. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.

The Captains were swept in the three-game series and will try to end their five-game losing skid when they travel to Midland, MI to take on the Great Lakes Loons. The opening game of the series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night at Dow Diamond.
