West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH - The Whitecaps managed just three hits as the Dragons offense exploded with a pair of home runs in a 9-1 victory over West Michigan. With the victory, Dayton avoided a three-game sweep.
Audy Ciriaco put the Whitecaps on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. But Brandon Menchaca matched the blast with a solo shot of his own on the first pitch thrown in the game by Whitecaps starter Andrew Hess.
In the fourth inning, Neftali Soto led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Logan Parker. Devin Mesoraco and Michael McKennon then had consecutive RBI sacrifice flies to give Dayton a 3-1 lead. In just his second start with the Dragons, Jeremy Horst struck out seven and allowed just two hits in five innings to pick up the win. Jeff Jeffords walked four but did not allow a hit in three shutout innings of relief before Zach Stewart pitched the ninth for Dayton.
The only two Whitecaps hits other than the home run by Ciriaco were a single by Ronnie Bourquin in the second and a single by Justin Henry in the ninth.
Centerfielder Kyle Peter was injured in the bottom of the sixth inning when he fielded a hit by Soto. Peter appeared to slip on the grass and injure his lower leg or ankle. He then had difficulty throwing the ball back to the infield, which allowed Soto to stretch the hit into a double. Peter had to be helped off the field by athletic trainers from both teams.
The Dragons added two in the inning on a triple by Parker that drove in Soto and a wild pitch by Kelvin Cedano that allowed Parker to score. Closer Noah Krol gave up four runs in the bottom of the eighth, which turned out to be unearned thanks to a one-out error by third baseman Cory Middleton. The Dragons rally was capped by a three run blast off the bat of Justin Reed.
