6-Year Old Miranda Pollitt celebrates Home Run for Life Wednesday

DAYTON, OH- Fifth Third Field will host six-year-old Miranda Pollitt from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield's "Home Run for Life" program when the Dayton Dragons take on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday, July 9th at 7 p.m.

The Dayton Dragons and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield have teamed up for their fifth season to showcase the "Home Run for Life" program. This program honors individuals who show tremendous strength and courage in fighting serious illnesses.

At the age of one, Miranda was diagnosed with an acid reflux disorder and infantile anorexia. For four years, Miranda struggled to eat and gain weight until her diagnosis changed. In 2007, Miranda's parents took her to Children's Medical Center to see if the acid reflux disorder was causing damage to her body. Doctors there began to think something else was wrong and performed a CAT scan and MRI. It was then that doctors discovered Miranda had a brain tumor that was causing her health problems.

Within a week, Miranda started chemotherapy and now visits Children's Medical Center every Friday for treatment. She's been doing very well with her treatment. Her medical team, led by Dr. Broxson, is amazed by her progress. She has gained a healthy amount of weight and loves to eat macaroni and cheese and Flaming Hot Fries.

Miranda will be joined at Fifth Third Field by her parents Rusty and Rhonda, siblings Alexis, Christiana, and Makayla, and many of the doctors, nurses, and Anthem representatives who played a major part in assisting her over the past several years.

During an inning break, Miranda will take a ceremonial lap around the bases signifying her "Home Run for Life." As she rounds third base, the Dayton Dragons players will be lined up to greet Miranda as she makes her way towards home plate. Upon crossing the plate, Miranda will be greeted by Dragons manager Donnie Scott, who will present her with a certificate making her an honorary Dayton Dragon and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Ohio President Erin Hoeflinger, who will present her with a personalized bat.
