Peoria Chiefs News Release
Davenport, IA - Two ninth inning runs were not enough as the Peoria Chiefs lost 8-2 at the hands of the Quad Cities River Bandits on Monday night. The loss drops the Chiefs out of first place at 12-7 on the second half and 42-45 on the season heading into Tuesday's league-wide off day. Peoria was outscored by Quad Cities 17-5 and dropped two of three in the series. The Chiefs threatened in the top of the first but came up empty. With one down, Nate Samson singled to right and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by Bandits starter Ryan Kulik. After a strikeout of Marquez Smith, Jovan Rosa singled to left, but Aaron Luna threw Samson out at the plate on a band-bang play to end the inning. Quad Cities took the lead in the bottom of the third against Chiefs starter Robert Hernandez. With one out Luna hit the first professional home run of his career, a solo shot to left for a 1-0 lead. Luna, drafted in the ninth round this June out of Rice, has played in just three games for the Bandits since signing with the Cardinals last week. After a pop out, Adron Chambers singled up the middle, but Brandon Guyer robbed Peter Kozma of extra bases with a leaping catch at the left field wall to end the inning. The Bandits added to their lead in the fourth with just one hit. Hernandez hit Brett Wallace with one out and Paul Vazquez singled to right as Wallace advanced to third. Tommy Pham bunted hard to first and instead of throwing home, Rosa took the sure out at first as Wallace scored for a 2-0 Bandits lead. Quad Cities blew the game wide open in the fifth inning as they knocked Hernandez from the contest. Luna walked to start the inning, and with one out, Chambers tripled him home. Kozma walked and stole second before Chambers scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Francisco Rivera. Brett Wallace made it 5-0 with a double off the right field wall before Craig Muschko relieved Hernandez. Paul Vazquez struck out swinging but went to first on a dropped third strike, and Wallace scored when Mario Merecedes' throw hit Vazquez and bounced into right field. Muschko then struck out Pham to end the inning with the Chiefs down 6-0. The Bandits capped the scoring against Peoria reliever Zach Ashwood in the eighth. Wallace started the inning with his second double of the night to get into scoring position. Vazquez fouled off three two-strike pitches before launching a two-run homer into the left-field berm for an 8-0 Bandits advantage. The homer is the team-leading 12th surrendered by Ashwood on the season. Peoria finally got on the board in the ninth against Bandits reliever Dylan Gonazlez. Rosa led off the frame with an infield single and scored when Luis Bautista hit a line drive homer off the left-field foul pole. The home run is the ninth of the season for Bautista and his eighth of the second half. Hernandez (1-1) allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits over just 4 2/3 innings. The 20-year-old hit one, walked one, allowed a home run and struck out two in his first loss of the season. Muschko struck out three and didn't allow a hit in 2 1/3 shutout innings. Ashwood allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout and a walk in his lone inning.
Player of the Game - Craig Muschko (RHP) - The Chiefs righty did not allow a hit or a walk out of the bullpen over 2 1/3 shutout innings. He struck out three and got the Chiefs out of the four-run sixth inning without any further damage inflicted.
