Whitecaps Get Rainbow, Win

June 26, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps sat through an hour rain delay before a double-rainbow emerged and Nick Quintana enjoyed his best professional game as part of a 3-1 win over the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Quintana, the second-round pick of the Detroit Tigers in this month's 2019 MLB Draft out of the University of Arizona, connected for his first professional home run to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth. The 21-year-old finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the victory.

Brad Bass, making his first start of the year with the Whitecaps gave his club a much-needed quality start, tossing five innings of four-hit, one-earned run baseball. The only blemish on the night for Bass was a solo home run in the second inning by Juan Martinez which gave the Dragons an early 1-0 lead. Consecutive two-out doubles by Zach Malis and Hector Martinez off Dayton starter Jhon De Jesus in the fourth inning brought home the Whitecaps first run. Quintana chased De Jesus out of the game in the sixth with his solo home run and provided the "Caps their first lead at 2-1. In the eighth, the Whitecaps scored a huge insurance run and upped their lead to 3-1. After walks to Wenceel Perez and Andre Lipcius, Quintana once again came through with an RBI single, his second of the night. Jared Tobey finished out the ninth inning in relief and retired the Dragons to give the Whitecaps their first win since defeating the Dragons in Dayton on June 13.

Chance Kirby (2-3) was near perfect in relief for West Michigan and picked up his second win, shutting out Dayton over three innings without allowing a hit, walked only one and struck out three. Bass, who spent the entire 2018 season with the "Caps did not factor in the decision but walked only one and struck out four. De Jesus (1-7) suffered the loss, scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs. De Jesus added five strikeouts and walked one. West Michigan tallied only six hits on the night, but outhit Dayton, who managed four hits overall. The win represented just the third victory for the Whitecaps in June and snapped a six-game home losing skid, as they improve to 1-4 and 22-52 overall. Tuesday marks the second-straight loss for Dayton as the Dragons slip to 2-3 in the second half standings, 30-45 in 2019.
