West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WI -- Kody Kaiser had three hits, including and eighth inning single that drove in the game-winning run, to lead the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 4-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Both starting pitchers pitched well but neither was involved in the decision.

Wisconsin scored first. Gerardo Avila singled with two outs to drive in Eddy Hernandez in the bottom of the second inning. That was it for the Rattlers off Whitecap starter Alfredo Figaro. The righty would allow three hits over seven innings and strikeout nine.

The game was moving along until the bottom of the fourth inning. Rattler shortstop Juan Diaz fouled a pitch off the arm of home plate umpire Nathan Thompson. The plate umpire had to be attended to and would eventually leave the game. Base umpire Brandon Misun had to go back to the change into his gear to ump behind the plate. Timber Rattler front office intern Trevor Van Schindel was called into action as the base umpire.

When play resumed, the Rattlers went down quietly. Then, West Michigan heated up in the top of the fifth. Ron Bourquin drew a walk to lead off the inning. One out later, Kody Kaiser singled to left for the first hit off Wisconsin starter Juan Ramirez to put runners at first and second. A single by Bowen drove in Bourquin to tie the game.

Ramirez got the second out, but hit Mark McBratney to load the bases. As McBratney was being tended to, Thompson came out of the Whitecap dugout and replaced Van Schindel as the base umpire.

Kyle Peter was up next and he just beat a throw to first after a slow roller to short. That infield single knocked in a run and gave the Caps a 2-1 lead.

West Michigan added a run against Ramirez in the top of the sixth. Kaiser's two-out RBI single to center knocked in Justin Henry. Ramirez struck out nine and allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings.

Figaro pitched a scoreless sixth inning to end his night and the Rattlers rallied in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Wilton Garcia. Joe Dunigan drew a two-out walk. Then, Korey Feiner lined a two-run homer to left to tie the game 3-3.

But, the tie did not last long. In the top of the eighth inning, Justin Henry doubled with one out off Rattler reliever Justin Souza. Kaiser flared in a two-out single to right-center to drive in Herny for a 4-3 lead.

Rudy Darrow retired the final six Rattler hitters of the game for his second save of the season.

Game two of the schedule is Tuesday night. Edward Paredes (1-2, 10.03) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. West Michigan sends Manny Miguelez (0-1, 6.27) to the mound. Game time is 6:35pm.
