Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa - After a long day of wondering and travelling, the Lansing Lugnuts finally got their series with Quad Cities River Bandits started Monday night, as the series had to be shifted to alternate sites due to flooding in the Quad Cities. The result for Lansing was eerily similar to previous day.
For the second straight game, Lansing blew a one-run lead in the ninth inning, as the River Bandits came from behind to take a 4-3 win in the first game of the set, which was played at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Trailing 3-2 in the ninth, the Quad Cities were able load the bases with no men out against Lansing's Cody Crowell. Crowell (0-1) was replaced by Ross Buckwalter, who allowed D'Marcus Ingram to rip a single into left field that brought Domnit Bolivar home to tie the game at 3-3. Justin Roberson then bounced a ball off of the plate back at the hurler, but Buckwalter could not handle the ball while jumping after it on the mound as the winning run came across for the River Bandits.
The Lugnuts snatched the lead in the opening frame. John Tolisano, Kevin Ahrens, and Darin Mastroianni all reached to start the game for Lansing. Matt Liuzza then lifted a sacrifice fly into right field that plated Tolisano to make it a 1-0 game.
Eduardo Sanchez's throwing error on a pick-off attempt allowed Ahrens to trott home from third base to push the lead to 2-0 for Lansing. The scoring in the inning ended when Raul Barron's sacrifice fly pushed Mastroianni across the plate to make it a 3-0 game.
The River Bandits would fight back by scratching runs across in the third and fourth innings to make it a one run game. Pete Kozma's RBI triple to right field cut the lead to 3-1 in the third.
Osvaldo Morales singled in the fourth frame and later scored by scampering home on a wild pitch to make it a 3-2 game.
Thomas Eager (1-1) got the win for the Bandits by throwing the final five innings of the game. He scattered four hits, but did not allow a single run to Lansing.
Lansing (13-10) and the Quad Cities (14-10) will play the second game of the series Tuesday afternoon at Alliant Energy Field in Clinton, Iowa. Randy Boone (2-0, 2.93) will take the ball for the Lugnuts, while Brian Broderick (0-1, 5.59) will hurl for the River Bandits. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
