Wheeling Hurts Titans' Playoff Hopes with 5-2 Road Win
March 8, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release
Wheeling (26-23-3-8, 63 pts) opened the scoring at 17:01 when Todd Orlando beat Cal Heeter (2-2, 19 saves) for the only goal of the opening period, as his shot from the left point deflected off a Titans player and into the net. Another deflection goal, credited to Scott Zurevinski when an initial shot hit off his chest, with Conor Goggin in the box for slashing, gave Wheeling the 2-0 lead at the end of the second period.
The Titans (25-29-4-4, 58 pts) offense came to life in the third when captain Andy Bombach jammed home a pass from Shane Harper at the side of the net for his 11th power play (21st overall) goal of the season. Andrew Johnston also earned an assist on the play. Trenton found themselves back on the power play minutes later when Orlando was sent off for roughing. Harper cashed in on the opportunity, stepping around a defender and launching a wrist-shot that found the top right corner over Petr Delmas' glove for his third goal of the year and second point of the game.
The tie wouldn't stand long, as Zack Torquato grabbed the lead for Wheeling with a breakaway goal with just under nine minutes to play. Zach Hansen slipped another redirected shot past Heeter 23 seconds after Torquato's, and Peter Lenes added an empty netter late to round out the scoring. Peter Delmas (20 saves, 14-8-0-4) helped the Nailers win for just the seventh time on the road this year (league-low) and second in three tries in Trenton. He also raises his career record against Trenton to 13-2.
The Titans went 2-for-6 on the power play while Wheeling was 1-for-3 with the man-advantage. Trenton falls to 2-5-1 against the Nailers this season (1-2 at home), and will have three more shots at their division rivals this season, including the final two home games of the year for the Titans on March 22nd and 23rd.
Trenton will attempt to climb back into the win column on Sunday when they host the Orlando Solar Bears at 3:05 pm (Daylight Savings Time). As always, that game can be heard on the flagship station 107.7 FM The Bronc, or online at 1077thebronc.com with the voice of the Titans, "The Bronc" Daryle Dobos.
