The Idaho Steelheads (39-16-1-6) used three third period goals to knock off the Gwinnett Gladiators (36-25-2-1) 5-3 on Friday night at the CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho. Gwinnett is at Idaho again on Saturday night at 9:10 p.m.
Casey Pierro-Zabotel opened the scoring 8:07 into the first period as he found a loose puck sitting on the goal line and tapped it home for his 20th goal of the season. Tristin Llewellyn collected an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.
Idaho took a 2-1 lead in the second on a pair of goals five minutes apart and never trailed from that point. Todd got the Steelheads on the board at 9:26 of the second period as he beat Gwinnett netminder Louis Domingue through traffic from the left point. Justin Taylor had an assist on the goal for Idaho.
Austin Smith then notched his 24th goal of the season to give Idaho the lead. Patrick Cullity and Jeremie Blaine had the assists on the goal at 14:53 of the second.
Gwinnett answered Smith's marker just 1:20 later as Scott Arnold ripped a shot past Idaho netminder Josh Robinson from point blank range in the slot. John Scrymgeour and Andy Brandt collected the assists on the goal for Gwinnett.
Rylan Galiardi broke a 2-2 tie 3:21 into the third period as he redirected a centering feed past Domingue for the goal. Ken Trentowski and Austin Smith had the helpers on the goal.
Gwinnett answered to pull even again as Pierro-Zabotel notched his second goal of the game as he flipped the puck over the outstretched glove of Idaho netminder Josh Robinson. Ryan Donald and Scott Arnold had the assists on the goal at 10:09 of the third period.
The Steelheads again broke the tie, this time on Chase Schaber's first goal of the season with 5:09 left in the third period. Scott Todd collected an assist on the game winning goal for Idaho. Justin Taylor then put the game away with an empty net goal for the Steelheads with 45 seconds left in the third period. David deKastrozza collected a helper on the marker.
