Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

On a dreary Wednesday where rain threatened to ruin an afternoon affair between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Sioux Falls Pheasants, the Goldeyes came out swinging and closed a six-game home stand with an 8-2 win over the Pheasants.

Unlike Tuesday, when the Goldeyes struggled to hit against the Sioux Falls starter, Winnipeg got off to a hot start, beating up Fighting Pheasants starter Chris Salberg for six runs in the first three innings.

Goldeyes shortstop Price Kendall had a strong game, as he went 3-for-4, scoring three runs and stealing two bases. Another catalyst in the early lead was first baseman Brian Myrow, who hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to extend Winnipeg's lead to 5-1.

"Anytime we score runs, we have a chance," said Myrow. "Our pitching staff allows the chance where, if we score five runs, we should be winning. Those early runs really help."

Wednesday's game was delayed due to rain twice. The first pitch was pushed back from 11:05 a.m. to 11:53 a.m. thanks to a quick-moving system over the city. The game was then delayed in progress for 90 minutes in the fourth inning as a 15-minute downpour left the infield soggy, prompting the Goldeyes grounds crew to repair it before continuing the game.

Winnipeg is no stranger to bad weather though, as they spent most of May playing through delays and postponed games.

"We had the idea that we were going to play even though the field was hard. We just know it's important to keep our mindset in the game as opposed to thinking it's going to be cancelled," said Myrow.

Goldeyes pitcher Chad Benefield recorded the win in relief, as he pitched three innings, allowing two hits, no runs, a walk, and striking out one. Salberg recorded the loss for Sioux Falls, and his record now drops to 1-6.

The 18-15 Goldeyes will now head on the road, beginning a three-game series in Kansas City on Friday night at 7 p.m. CST. The game can be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290.
