Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -Despite scoring in their second at-bat of the game, the Sioux Falls Pheasants could not produce enough offense to keep pace with the Winnipeg Goldeyes in an 8-2 loss Wednesday afternoon at Winnipeg's Shaw Park. Winnipeg won the rubber match to take the three-game series.

A boisterous crowd of 7, 386 watched Winnipeg score six times in the first three innings in response to Pheasants catcher Henry Cotnreras' solo home run in the top of the first inning. Winnipeg took the lead for good on Jon Weber's two-run double to left field in the bottom of the first inning.

Price Kendall paced the Goldeyes with three hits and three runs scored. Brian Myrow was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI.

Pheasants starter Chris Salberg suffered his third consecutive loss, lasting five innings. His outing was shortened because of a 91-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth inning. Despite the lengthy break, Salberg returned to pitch the fourth and fifth. He allowed six runs on nine hits while walking five and striking out five.

Goldeyes' starter Chris Salamida could only complete four-plus innings because of the rain. The victory went to reliever Chad Benefield (1-0), who tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

Brandon Sing knocked in a run for the Pheasants in the eighth inning with a single, but Winnipeg responded with two runs off reliever Ben Rosen in the bottom of the eighth.

The Pheasants had a few bright spots in the game. Gus Milner and Contreras each had two hits to lead the Pheasants offense. Contreras batted in the second spot in the lineup for the second time this year. Meanwhile, reliever Dan McDaniel struck out the side in the sixth inning, his only inning of work.

The loss drops the Pheasants to 12-20 on the season.

The Pheasants begin a four-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 7:02 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, in Fargo. The game will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and online at www.kwsn.com.
