Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
WICHITA, KS.---Shreveport-Bossier hurler Ryan DiPietro (6-1) became just the second pitcher to record six wins in the American Association this year, throwing eight scoreless innings and allowing just two hits while leading the Captains to an 8-0 victory over Wichita Wednesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Dan Griffin pitched a scoreless ninth to give the Captains their first shutout of the year. The feat is all the more impressive given that the Wingnuts came into the game leading the league with a .309 batting average. Wichita had not been shut out this year.
The Captains took an early 2-0 lead off Wingnuts starter Jonathan Ellis (0-3) in the first by starting things off with three straight hits. Mike Provencher led off the game with a single and scored on Robert Perry's triple to deep right center. Bryan Sabatella's double would extend his hit streak to 20 games, the longest in the league this year, and score Perry to give Shreveport-Bossier the two-run advantage.
In the second, the Captains would add three more on a two-run triple by Alex Cowart and a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Provencher. Cowart went 6-for-14 with a homer and four RBIs on the road trip. Provencher, who went 2-for-4 finished the six-game trip going 11-for-27.
The Captains made it 6-0 in the third on an RBI single by Joe Urtuzuastegui that scored Andres Rodriguez. Earlier in the inning, Rodriguez was involved in a curious baserunning play when Bryan Frichter hit a deep fly ball to center field.
Rodriguez, who was on first with a walk, had rounded second base on the fly but thought Wichita center fielder Brent Clevlen had caught the ball, though he did not. Rodriguez started running back to first base and crossed paths with Frichter who indicated that it was actually a hit. Rodriguez turned around, touched second and headed for third but got caught in a rundown between second and third and ultimately slid back into second base, which was already occupied by Frichter. Fricther was called out as Rodriguez was the lead runner who was safely back to second base.
Frichter rounded the bases in less adventurous fashion in the seventh when he hit his second home run of the year in the seventh to make it 8-0.
DiPietro allowed just six base runners in his eight innings of work. The only hits the southpaw allowed were back-to-back singles to start the second inning. He walked two, hit a batter, and had a base runner reach on Provencher's fielding error at second in the fourth inning. DiPietro at one point retired 12 in a row and finished the game retiring 15 of 16. Wichita had just one runner reach second base and never touched third.
Griffin struck out one and allowed a base hit in the ninth to preserve the win.
Shreveport-Bossier improves to 16-16 and 2-4 to conclude their six-game roadtrip. The Captains are off Thursday before opening up a six-game homestand with a three-game series against the Fort Worth Cats on Friday, June 17 for Townsquare Media Presents "We Care about Kids" tribute to Justin Bloxom. The evening also includes metroPCS Youth League Night and Buffalo Wild Wings "Kids' Run the Bases." First pitch is 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05.
