Washington Snap The Freedom's Five-Game Win Streak With A 3-2 Upset
June 15, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY- The Florence Freedom were looking to improve to 13-4 at the Home of the Florence Freedom and to increase their win streak to six games. The Washington Wild Things, however, had other plans for Florence, as they defeated the Freedom 3-2 in a rare pitcher's duel.
Staff Ace RHP Alec Lewis made his team-leading 6th start of the year. For the 2nd time of 2012, Lewis pitched all nine innings, but unlike his previous complete game where he picked up the win, Lewis was handed his third loss of the season. Lewis received little run support thanks to Washington's RHP Gary Lee, who improved to 2-2. Lee's final line was six innings and one run on two hits, while Lewis went nine innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits.
For the 2nd straight night, Washington took the early lead as they scored twice in the 1st inning. In his first professional at bat, CF Andrew Heck led of the game with a single, and two batters later, 3B Taylor Oldham walked with one out. Both came around to score when DH Shain Stoner hit a ground ball to 3B Chris Curley, who tried to turn a 5-4-3 double play, but instead threw the ball into right field, allowing Heck and Oldham to cross the plate.
The only other time the Wild Things scored came in the 4th, when Stoner led off the inning with a single and eventually scored on a SS Michael Mooney sacrifice fly. The Freedom did not tally a run until the bottom of the 6th when 2B Pierre LePage doubled and scored on a RF Peter Fatse single. In the 8th with a 3-1 deficit, Curley hit his 8th long ball of the year off RHP Steven Grife, a solo shot to left center field.
The Freedom out hit the Wild Things 6-5, but stranded eight base runners, as they never led in the game. Washington's RHP Nathan Striz entered in the 8th and pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball and picked up his 3rd save of the year.
The Freedom look to win the rubber match game in the series tomorrow, as they will send RHP Daniel DeSimone (2-1) to face Washington's RHP Justin Hall (1-2) at the Home of the Florence Freedom at 6:05 pm.
