FLORENCE, KY - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, were able to even up the series with the Florence Freedom with a 3-2 win on Friday night in Florence, Kentucky.
The Wild Things (10-15) got strong work out of the veteran Gary Lee on Friday night, as the righty went six strong innings, scattering five hits, giving up one run and striking out two. His record improves to 2-2.
For the third night in a row, Washington jumped out to a lead as Allen Boyer scored Andrew Heck on a sacrifice fly to left to put the Wild Things ahead 1-0. Heck reached base via a leadoff single to start off the game. Michael Bando then followed with a fielder's choice that scored Taylor Oldham.
Washington was able to capitalize off of a leadoff baserunner again in the fourth as Shain Stoner led off the inning with a single. Stoner advanced to second on Boyer's bunt and again to third when Michael Bando singled. Michael Mooney then drove in Stoner with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Peter Fatse singled in the sixth to score Pierre LePage as the Freedom (15-11) began to chip away at the deficit and made the score 3-1.
The Wild Things got out of a jam in the seventh, after two walks to lead off the inning Steven Grife got John Malloy to pop up a bunt attempt that was caught by Grife. Grife then induced LePage into an inning ending double play to avoid danger.
