Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (13-12) @ RIVER CITY RASCALS (15-10)

Friday, June 15 - 7:05 p.m. CT

T.R. Hughes Ballpark - O'Fallon, MO

Game #26 - Road Game #14 (13-12), (7-6)

RHP #28 Jim Schult (1-1, 6.61 ERA) vs. RHP #17 Nick Kennedy (1-1, 3.86 ERA)

Last time out...

The Joliet Slammers took advantage of four River City Rascals errors to prevail by a final score of 6-5 Thursday night. Joliet grabbed a 3-2 lead in the second and never trailed after that. They tacked on three runs in the seventh but River City responded with three runs of their own in the eighth inning. Amalio Diaz entered the game and picked up the four-out save. Offensively, the Slammers were led by Hector Pellot (2-3, R, 2-BB) and Erik Lis (2-5) but it was Jimmy Waters who got the key hit in the game, doubling in two runs in the seventh. Tommy Mendoza was the star on the mound for Joliet, going seven innings while only giving up two runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out four. Mendoza retired the final 13 batters he faced. With the win the Slammers knocked the Rascals out of first place in the West division and pulled to within two games of second behind River City.

For Starters...

Jim Schult is making his first start this season for the Slammers. So far in 10 relief appearances, Schult has a record of 1-1 with a 6.61 ERA in 16 and a third innings. He last pitched on June 10 and got the win in the Slammers' marathon five hours and 34 minutes game against the London Rippers. Schult brings professional experience to the fold as the Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the NYSL Federals. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season. More on Schult can be found in the "Bullpen" section of the game notes as this is his first start.

More patience...

So far in 2012 the Slammers have walked 104 times, the third most in the league. In 2011 they finished with the second fewest walks in the league.

Can't touch this...

The Slammers' pitching staff has held opponents to a .228 batting average on the season. This is tied for the lowest opponents' batting average in the league.

Give me some relief!

In 43.2 IP in May, Joliet's bullpen had an era of 1.88. In 49 IP in June, they have a 4.96 ERA.

Almost the same as last year...

The Slammers currently sit at 13-12, the exact same record they had after 25 games in 2011. After 25 games last year, Joliet was 1.5 games out of first. This year they sit three games out of first.

Abel is able...

Abel Nieves has hit safely in all but two of the games he's played in this season. His 10 multi-hit games are tops on the team. Nieves leads the Slammers in batting average (.390), hits (32), total bases (39), OBP (.469), SLG (.476) and OPS (.944).

Error indicator...

The Slammers are 2-9 in games when they make an error. They are 11-3 in games when they do not.

Out-hit...

When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 11-4, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 1-8.

Movin' on up!

RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Diamondbacks on May 21. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.

Transaction Wire...

The Slammers released RHP Eric Binder and RHP Seth Hobbs yesterday. They signed LHP Mike Gaffigan and RHP Tyler Ware.
