River City Rascals News Release

O'Fallon, Mo. - This is how it is supposed to look. The Rascals got solid showing from Nick Kennedy who made his starting pitching debut, played flawless defense, got shutout relief and poured on the offense in a 13-1 pounding of Joliet on Friday night.

Kennedy (2-1) was thrust into starting as River City (16-10) continues to look to strengthen the rotation and he did not disappoint, pitching six innings while allowing just one run on five hits before exiting the game with a 5-1 lead after the Rascal offense struck in the fourth and fifth.

Trailing 1-0, River City got the first two aboard in the fourth inning with a walk to Kyle Jones and a single by Josh Workman. Gerardo Avila drove a single to right that was misplayed leading to two runs scored and Avila standing at third base. He would score on a Chris Andreas groundout to give the Rascals a 3-1 lead.

The Rascals added two in the fifth on a sac-fly from Charlie Lisk and a double from Avila for the 5-1 lead.

Jason Sullivan and Brandon Cunniff pitched scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth respectively before the Rascals exploded in the eighth.

By the end of the inning, River City had sent 13 batter to the plate and scored eight runs before the first out was recorded, none bigger than the two-run homer from Jason Patton that essentially put the game out of reach from Joliet.

The Slammers and Rascals close out the three-game series Saturday night with first pitch set for 7:05. Joliet sends Steven Maxwell (2-2, 3.45) to the mound against River City's Preston Vancil (1-2, 4.00).
