Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves (3-2) could not capitalize on a plethora of scoring opportunities on Saturday night at First Energy Stadium as they dropped their second straight game to the Reading Fightin Phils (2-3) by a 6-4 final.
Erie took an early lead in the third against Reading starter Mark Appel. Ryan Kreidler was hit by a pitch and doubled home by Jacob Robson for a 1-0 lead.
Reading tied the game in the last of the third and took the lead in the fourth against Erie starter Ricardo Pinto. Matt Vierling doubled with one out and advanced on a passed ball. He scored on a Josh Stephen double for a 2-1 lead. Stephen later scored on a Rodolfo Duran base hit making it 3-1.
The SeaWolves closed the gap with two outs in the fifth against reliever Taylor Lehman. Josh Lester and Yariel Gonzalez each singled with two outs. Juan Centeno doubled home Lester but Gonzalez was thrown out at the plate to end the frame, keeping Erie down by a run.
The Fightins added to the lead in the home half of the fifth scoring a pair of runs against reliever Brad Bass. Arquimedes Gamboa singled, Dalton Guthrie walked and Vierling was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Gamboa scored on a Stephen groundout and Guthrie scored on a sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, Vierling extended the Reading lead to four runs with a solo home run off of reliever Max Green making it a 6-2 game.
Erie got two within two runs in the top of the eighth against reliever Tyler Carr. Robson walked with one out and Drew Ward crushed an opposite-field, two run home run. The long ball was Ward's first of the season but the 'Wolves could not inch any closer.
Lehman (1-0) earned the win allowing a run on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in three innings.
Ricardo Pinto (0-1) took the loss allowing three runs on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
Joel Cesar worked a scoreless ninth, picking up his first save of the year.
