Walleye End Fuel Home Win Streak at Six
December 3, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Indy Fuel News Release
Indianapolis - The Toledo Walleye put an end to the Indy Fuel's 6-game home winning streak to start the season with a 4-2 victory Thursday night at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
Garett Bembridge got the Fuel (9-8-2-0) on the board first with his team-leading eighth goal of the season at 9:35, batting home an Alex Lavoie chance to make it 1-0 Fuel.
Toledo (10-5-1-3) responded to tie the game in the second period on a Josh Shalla marker at 6:24.
Late in the third period the game got interesting. After Austin Wutherich scored to make it 2-1 Walleye at 17:38, Beau Schmitz took a delay of game penalty to put the Fuel on the power play just 14 seconds later. Off the resulting faceoff in the Walleye zone and with Fuel goalie Shane Owen (24 saves) on the bench for the extra attacker, Alden Hirschfeld fired the puck high and hard off the glass from deep in his own zone and the angle was perfect, finding the now-empty net to make it 3-1.
The Fuel were not daunted and managed a power play goal at 18:42 from Rhett Bly to draw back within a goal at 3-2, but once again with Owen out for the extra man Wutherich scored his second of the night to seal the game at 19:44.
Jake Paterson (17 saves) earned the win for the Walleye.
The same two teams go right back at it tomorrow night at 7:35 pm ET, with the Morellis Cleaners Pre-game Show starting 15 minutes before every puck drop on CBS Sports 1430.
