Everblades Top Steelheads Behind Werek's Pair

December 3, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID - The Idaho Steelheads (6-11-4) took the ice at CenturyLink Arena on Wednesday night for the first time since November 7th, but Ethan Werek's two-goal night spoiled the home-coming party as the Florida Everblades (15-7-0) topped Idaho, 4-1.

Werek gave the Everblades a 2-0 lead at 9:41 of the second period when he camped out in front of Steelheads' goaltender Philippe Desrosiers and deflected a Mark Nemec point shot up under the crossbar.

The Steelheads responded with a shorthanded goal, their second of the season, just 2:51 later when Brandon Magee took off down the right wing on a 2-on-1 rush with Zack Kamrass. Magee toe-dragged the puck inside Ryan Martindale, a forward playing defense, and snapped a shot on Everblades goaltender Daniel Altshuller. Altshuller made the initial save, but the rebound trickled behind him into the crease where Kamrass pounced for his second goal of the season.

Just 3:50 later, Werek answered right back with his second of the game and ninth of the season. Werek bull-dozed forward off a defensive zone face-off, collected a loose puck in the neutral zone, and wired a wrist shot past Desrosiers' glove to reestablish Florida's two goal lead.

Matt Willow's opened the scoring for Florida at 3:39 of the first with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle. The Steelheads were outshot 18-5 in that first period, but outshot the Everblades 28-16 the rest of the way. They would only be able to get the one puck past Altshuller, who had his personal shutout streak snapped at 165:54 on Kamrass' goal.

Willows and Werek each have points in nine of their past ten games, with Werek collecting 17 points (6-11-17) and Willows gathering 13 points (6-7-13) over that stretch. They have combined for 13 points in three games this season against Idaho. Werek would earn an assist on Maxime St. Cyr's empty-netter to close the game.

Three different Steelheads made their debuts tonight. Kyle Jean, Jake Fallon, and Zach Yuen were all used in every situation by Head Coach Neil Graham, with Fallon registering two shots on goal.

The Steelheads and Everblades meet again on Friday night at CenturyLink Arena with puck-drop scheduled for 7:10 pm MT, heard on 1350AM KTIK and seen on Cable One and ECHLTV. Fans in attendance will receive a Bomber Beanie Cap courtesy of Blue Cross of Idaho.

Play of the Game:

The Steelheads earned some momentum with their shorthanded goal, pulling within a goal of the Everblades and carrying much of the momentum through the second period. The Everblades took that momentum right back on Ethan Werek's second goal, winning a battle off the face-off, powering through the neutral zone, and rifling a wrist shot past Desrosiers from the high-slot on which Desrosiers barely had time to move. The Steelheads have done a lot right in recent games only to have their few mistakes hurt them. Tonight was another example, as they outshot Florida 14-7 in the second period but went to the locker room trailing by two goals against a team undefeated when leading after two periods.
