Walks Haunt Tribe as Norfolk Takes Road Opener

NORFOLK, VA. - Tribe pitchers issued 10 walks and the defense committed three costly errors in the field as the Indianapolis Indians were topped by the Norfolk Tides on Tuesday night, 8-1. The setback puts Indy below the .500 mark for the first time since July 19.

The night was off to a good start for the Tribe as Indianapolis (56-57) took a 1-0 lead in the second. Will Craig lined a double into the left-field corner to open the inning, then scored when Trayvon Robinson scorched a single to left-center field. Despite a single by Jason Martin, the rally was held in check to one run.

Norfolk (45-68) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice, but Indy's mounting free passes proved costly in the fifth when the Tides took the lead. The staff issued five walks in the inning, including two with the bases loaded that forced in runs. Rio Ruiz produced the only hit of the inning for Norfolk, as they scored four to take the 5-1 lead.

Austin Hays led off the sixth and was hit by a pitch, and he later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ademar Rifaela. The frame was capped by former Indians utilityman, Christopher Bostick. He lined a double into left-center field to advance two runs home and expanded the Tides' lead to 8-1.

While in front 1-0, the Indians had the bases loaded in the third inning with one out but did not score. Jason Martin extended his hitting streak to eight games with three hits, his 25th multi-hit effort of the season. Jake Elmore, who began the game as the league's leading hitter at .343, went 2-for-4 to extend his average by a fraction to .344.

Indianapolis starter James Marvel worked four innings and allowed one unearned run. He exited after throwing 85 pitches. Norfolk's Keegan Akin pitched the first four frames and allowed the Tribe's only to run, but it was Hunter Harvey (1-1) who earned the win out of the Tides' bullpen.

Indy will look to bounce back in game two of the series on Wednesday night, first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The Indians are on the longest remaining road trip of the season but return to Victory Field on Tuesday, August 13.
