Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - Five pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Durham Bulls beat the Syracuse Mets 5-0 Tuesday night at the DBAP in the opener of a three-game set. Anthony Banda (1-2) recorded the victory for the Bulls, while Ervin Santana (2-2) suffered the loss for the Mets.
Trevor Richards made his Bulls debut with a scoreless inning, and Vidal Nuno dealt the game's second frame. Banda then followed with four strong innings, before the rehabbing Jose Alvarado tossed an inning and Cole Sulser closed the door with two scoreless frames for the Bulls' first shutout since July 6.
On the offensive side for Durham, Nate Lowe jumped on the Mets pitching staff quickly, beginning with an RBI single in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Rocky Gale grew the lead with his first two RBI as a Bull to extend the lead to 3-0 in the second frame, before Kean Wong added another run on an RBI single to end the inning up 4-0.
Daniel Robertson extended the lead for the Bulls with an RBI single in the fourth inning to make it a 5-0 contest. From there, the Bulls pitching staff held on, limiting the visitors to just five hits and striking out nine.
The Bulls and Mets will get together for game two of the three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 at the DBAP. Right-hander Arturo Reyes will take the mound for the Bulls and face off against Mets right-hander Corey Oswalt.
