Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Right wing Tyler Toffoli tallied his second hat trick of the season and center Linden Vey recorded four assists as the Manchester Monarchs topped the Worcester Sharks, 5-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.
Manchester (32-14-2-5) leads the Atlantic Division with 71 points. Worcester (23-20-3-1) sits in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 50 points.
"(Toffoli) showed a scoring touch, and obviously the familiarity with his linemates from previous stints had a lot to do with it," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "He's a guy that has a gift to score and we saw a taste of that here today. Obviously, that line put up a lot of points and they did exactly what we'd hoped they would do."
Toffoli netted his 11th goal of the season at 11:18 of the second period to give Manchester the 2-1 advantage. Defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk rushed down the left wing, over the blueline and dropped a pass back to a Vey who was trailing. Bodnarchuk continued to skate toward the net and received a pass back from Vey in the left face-off circle. Bodnarchuk found Toffoli on the right doorstep and he scored on the one-timer to put the Monarchs on top.
Monarchs center Jordan Weal scored the opening tally on the power play at 8:25 of the first period. Vey passed the puck to Weal in stride at center ice. Weal fed right wing Zach O'Brien at the blueline as he entered the offensive zone along left point. O'Brien dropped the puck back Weal who carried the puck down the left wing and backhanded it top-shelf over the blocker of goaltender Troy Grosenik.
Center Freddie Hamilton evened the game at 1-1 on a power play goal at 1:33 of the second period. The Sharks had possession of the puck in the offensive zone while skating with the man advantage. Defenseman Sena Acolaste fired the puck from the left point at goaltender Martin Jones. The shot was originally stopped, but picked up by center Chad Rau on the left side off the crease. Rau's first attempt was denied and the rebound trickled out front to Hamilton, who buried it to tie the game at 1-1.
Left winger Tanner Pearson was credited with a 5-on-3 goal at 14:17 of the second period to extend the Monarchs lead to 3-1. Forward Nick Shore sauced a pass from the left point to left wing Nick Deslauriers at the right point. Deslauriers sent the puck down to the right face-off dot where Pearson was stationed. Pearson centered the puck toward the crease, but the puck deflected off the skate of Sharks defenseman Matt Tennyson and squirted five-hole past Grosenick.
Toffoli picked up his second goal of the night at 11:03 of the third period. Toffoli and Vey created a two-on-one opportunity by breaking away from the pack on a loose puck in the neutral zone. Toffoli skated toward the slot and fed the puck over to Vey who was sliding down to the right wing face-off circle. Vey then gave it back to Toffoli on the left doorstep for the give-and-go goal that beat Grosenick to give the Monarchs a 4-1 advantage.
Toffoli completed his hat trick at 14:34 of the third period. Vey gathered the puck in the left corner, spun off of a defender, and glided toward the left face-off circle. Vey found Toffoli on the right doorstep for the one-timer over the glove of Grosenick to give the Monarchs a 5-1 lead.
Jones (13-3-2) collected his 13th win of the season, stopping 23-of-24 shots faced. Grosenick (11-6-0) took his sixth loss of the season with 38 saves on 43 shots.
Manchester was 2-for-6 on the power play. Worcester went 1-for-3 on the man advantage.
