Portland Pirates News Release

Glens Falls, NY - Mark Visentin set a career high in saves with 53 to lead the Portland Pirates past the Adirondack Phantoms 3-2 in a shootout. Visentin becomes the first goaltender in the American Hockey League to make more than 50 saves this season.

The first period was highlighted by great goaltending from both Mark Visentin and Yann Denis, with each making spectacular saves under heavy pressure. Chris Brown was able to break through first for the Pirates, jamming a puck past Denis on the power play with just 18 seconds remaining in the period to give Portland a 1-0 lead. Brandon Gormley and Daine Todd had assists, with Gormley extending his point streak to 4 games.

29 seconds into the second period the Pirates ran into penalty trouble as Mathieu Brodeur was assessed a 5 minute penalty and a misconduct for boarding Tyler Brown. Less than a minute later, the Phantoms tied the game as Ben Holmstrom scored for Adirondack. The game would continue to get chippy with each side picking up penalties. The Pirates capitalized on a roughing penalty assessed to Rob Bordson, with Tobias Rieder beating Danis to give the Pirates the lead. After a great save by Mark Visentin on the other end, Rieder took a feed from Brown for his 16th goal of the year. Andy Miele also picked up an assist on the third power play goal of the night.

Adirondack cranked up the pressure on Visentin in the third, peppering him with 21 shots in the third period. Akeson broke through to tie the game at 2 for the Phantoms with 3:39 left in regulation and the game would head to overtime. Neither team scored in overtime, despite the Pirates putting 8 shots on Denis during the bonus frame, sending the game went to a shootout. Lucas Lessio's fourth round goal would prove to be the difference, with Kennedy and Miele also scoring, and the Pirates took home their 5th shootout victory of the season.

The Pirates and Phantoms combined for 99 shots in regulation and OT, with Mark Visentin setting a career high in saves with 53. His previous high was 48 against the Providence Bruins on January 2, 2013 against the Providence Bruins. The 55 shots allowed by Portland was the most since 2/15/2009 against the Lowell Devils at home. Visentin fell only 8 shots short of tying Martin Brochu's single game record of 61 saves set in 1996, but did set a season high in saves in the AHL this season.
