Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators rode their special teams, scoring four power play goals and a shorthanded tally, to record a 6-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Friday night.

The win allowed the Senators (30-15-1-3, 64 points) to extend their East Division lead over the Penguins (28-17-2-3, 61 points) to three points. The six goals scored by Binghamton equaled the single-game season-high allowed by the Penguins (November 8 vs. Albany).

The scoring came fast and furious in the first period, as the teams combined for four goals in a span of 6:23, and five goals overall in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Shane Prince started the scoring 8:17 into the game with Philip Samuelsson in the penalty box for tripping.

Recently acquired Spencer Machacek picked up his second goal in as many games with the Penguins just over a minute later, tying the score at 1-1.

It was all Binghamton from there, as Corey Cowick (even strength), Jean-Gabriel Pageau (shorthanded) and Mike Hoffman (power play) each scored during the final seven minutes of the opening frame to stretch the Sens' lead to 4-1. Pageau's goal chased netminder Eric Hartzell from the game, as the Penguins goaltender allowed three goals on 13 shots in 14:40 of play.

The second period passed without any additional scoring, before Cole Schneider made the score 5-1 less than five minutes into the third.

Pens' captain Tom Kostopoulos picked up his team-leading 19th goal of the season - his 11th power play goal - 47 seconds after Schneider's goal, to make the score 5-2.

But Hoffman netted his second goal of the night - his team-leading 27th tally - at 8:07 of the third to complete the scoring.

Hartzell took the loss for the Penguins, while Deslauriers stopped 21 of 24 shots in relief for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Binghamton was four-for-nine on the power play in the game, while the Pens tallied once in their four tries on the man advantage. The Penguins travel to Hershey on Saturday night at 7:00pm for an important East Division matchup between the intra-state rivals. The Pens currently lead the Bears by one point in the division standings.
