Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - Behind six scoreless innings by right-hander Yordano Ventura and three frames by the bullpen, the Omaha Storm Chasers (62-63) put together their eighth shutout of the season by blanking the Fresno Grizzlies (58-66) by a score of 1-0. The Storm Chasers lead in the division is now 1.5 games with Memphis yet to play tonight in Colorado Springs and 19 games remaining for Omaha.
Ventura allowed six hits and five walks during his six shutout innings, but worked to strand eight Grizzlies runners en route to his third win at Werner Park in seven appearances. Ventura is riding a 13.2 scoreless innings streak dating back to August 4 with his second straight shutout start, and in his last 26.0 innings he has allowed only three earned runs over five outings. Ventura has 36 strikeouts in his last 31.0 innings, and in eight of his 12 total appearances this season for Omaha he has given up one run or less (also in 14 of his 23 total appearances across Double-A and Triple-A).
The Storm Chasers offense managed only four hits on the day, one more than their season low, but Anthony Seratelli provided the only offense in the game with a solo homer in the first inning. The long ball to right field was his 11th on the year tying him with Christian Colon, Brett Hayes and Xavier Nady for the most by an Omaha player this season. Seratelli also played the hero in the field as well by throwing out Grizzlies outfielder Gary Brown at the plate on a bases loaded fly ball in the fifth, after Brown was recently named the fastest player in the PCL in Baseball America's "Best Tools Survey."
Right-hander Michael Mariot and left-hander Will Smith allowed only three total baserunners in the final three innings to secure the shutout, the fourth at Werner Park this season. Mariot has not allowed a run in his last seven appearances totaling nine innings, and the Nebraska alum has not allowed an earned run in 27 of his 39 relief appearances this season.
The Storm Chasers will look to notch their third series win in the last six series at Werner Park tomorrow and are expected to start left-hander John Lamb, who will make his Triple-A debut in the game. Lamb will face off with fellow southpaw Eric Surkamp (4-1, 3.02) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. in the last game before the pivotal five-game series at Memphis starting Friday.
