Memphis Splits Doubleheader in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Memphis Redbirds split a doubleheader with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Tuesday night at Security Service Field, winning 8-6 in the twinbill opener, and dropping a 2-0 shutout in the finale.

Memphis (60-64) is now one game behind division-leading Omaha in the PCL American Northern Division and moves to 9-3 in doubleheader action with the split. Its nine wins match Oklahoma City for most in the league.

The Redbirds rode a five-run first-inning rally for an 8-6 victory over the Sky Sox in the twinbill opener.

Shortstop Greg Garcia went 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored. Kolten Wong and Chad Huffman also added two hits with a run.

Carlos Martinez improved to 5-2 in his first start since being optioned by St. Louis on Saturday. The right-hander gave up a season high five runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked one on 91 pitches, 57 for strikes. Martinez also doubled, recorded two sacrifices, and scored two runs.

Memphis batted around and put up a five-spot in the top of the first against Colorado Springs starter Sean Gallagher (0-2), who tossed 33 pitches in the inning. With the bases loaded, third baseman Jamie Romak looped a single to shallow left field for the first two runs. Next batter Garcia then tattooed his second home run of the season, a three-run shot over the right field wall.

Martinez hurled 29 pitches while laboring through a lengthy third frame, as Colorado Springs scored four runs (two earned). Kent Matthes opened the frame with a walk and later scored on a Gallagher infield groundout. Drew Garcia, who reached on a double, then came home on a fielding error by Wong. The Sky Sox plated the next two runs on a wild pitch and infield single by Ryan Wheeler.

Memphis loaded the bases in the next inning, but settled by just one run for a 6-4 lead. Wong worked walk with the bases juiced to score Martinez before Brock Peterson grounded into an inning-ending double play.

The Redbirds added another run in the fifth thanks to a couple fielding errors with no outs by Sky Sox. Jamie Romak reached on a fielding gaffe by Ryan Wheeler, moved to second on Garcia's single, and scored on Josh Rutledge booted a routine groundball.

Both teams traded runs in the seventh as Memphis plated an insurance run with consecutive doubles by Martinez and Mike O'Neill. Reid Brignac walked and scored on a Jordan Pacheco double for the Sky Sox.

Fernando Salas allowed one run while picking up his 10th save, passing Gene Stechschulte for fourth place on the Redbirds' all-time list.

Gallagher was charged with six runs on six hits in four innings for the loss.

Back-to-back home runs by Ryan Wheeler and Xavier Nady off Nick Greenwood in the fourth inning gave Colorado Springs a 2-0 shutout win over the Redbirds in the doubleheader finale.

Collin McHugh (5-3) tossed six shutout innings of four-hit ball while fanning five for the win. Logan Kensing converted his team-leading 14th save.

Leadoff hitter Mike O'Neill had two of Memphis' four hits, including a double. Audry Perez and Chris Swauger each singled.

In his fifth spot start, Greenwood (2-6) allowed only the two solo home runs in five innings for the loss. The left-hander walked one and struck out three. Victor Marte worked a perfect frame in relief.

The Redbirds and Sky Sox will continue their series at 7:35 pm CT on Wednesday night. Memphis will send left-hander Nick Additon (8-6, 4.04) to the mound to face Sky Sox left-hander Nick Schmidt (4-3, 4.79).
