RedHawks Can't Contain Padres, Fall 13-6

Tucson, Ariz. - The Tucson Padres had another big first inning and kept it going at the plate throughout the night in a 13-6 win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks before 2,930 at Kino Stadium Tuesday night.

The RedHawks (69-55) have dropped five of their first six games on their current road trip and have lost four straight games for the first time since they had a five-game losing streak May 23-26.

Things got off to a good and unusual start for the RedHawks. With a runner on base in the first inning, George Springer hit a ball of the top of the 40-foot high batter's eye.

However, Tucson center fielder Reymond Fuentes, who was playing in his fourth game with the Padres, did not realize the ball was in play. Springer raced around the bases and collected his second inside-the-park home run since July 27 and gave the RedHawks a 2-0 lead.

For the second straight night, Tucson (65-59) was able to have a huge first inning. One night after scoring four runs in the first, the Padres scored five runs in their first at bat Tuesday. Each of the first six batters reached base, a stretch that included five straight hits.

Mike Wilson tied the game with a two-run single, and Brandon Allen gave Tucson the lead with an RBI double. Gregorio Petit and Chris Robinson also added RBIs to make it 5-2.

A sac fly by Jose Martinez pulled the RedHawks within two in the third. Jon Singleton and Marwin Gonzalez each hit RBI doubles in the fourth to even the score, 5-5.

Tucson was able to break the tie two batters into the bottom of the inning. Robinson and Fuentes hit back-to-back doubles to regain the lead, and Dean Anna later added a sac fly.

Still down 7-5 in the sixth, Carlos Perez knocked a two-out RBI single to make it a one-run game.

In the bottom of the inning, the Padres were able to answer with runs of their own for the third time. They plated three runs, including an RBI single by Fuentes, an RBI triple by Daniel Robertson, and another sac fly by Anna as the Padres extended the lead to 10-6.

Tucson added three more for good measure in the bottom of the eighth, and the 13 runs allowed by the RedHawks set a new season high. It was also the second time in six games during the current road trip the RedHawks allowed at least 12 runs in a game.

RedHawks starting pitcher Asher Wojciechowski endured another tough outing on the west coast, allowing seven runs and eight hits over five innings. Wojciechowski (7-6) struck out four and walked two.

Tucson reliever Jorge Reyes picked up the win after replacing starting pitcher Matt Andriese in the fifth. Reyes allowed one run and three hits over two innings.
