Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers topped the Tri-City ValleyCats 7-1 on Monday night, as the 'Cats were held to three hits in the second game of a three-game series at Thomas Dodd Stadium, in Norwich, Conn.

Elieser Hernandez, making his first start of the year, struck out six batters in five innings, increasing his strikeout total to 18 on the year, good for second among New York-Penn League hurlers. However, a two-out RBI double by Connecticut center fielder Victor Padron, followed by a two-run single by second baseman Patrick McKenzie, put the Tigers on top 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

That frame was the only inning Hernandez allowed runs, but Connecticut right-hander Chase Edwards shone just a bit brighter, holding Tri-City hitless until Dexture McCall smacked a two-out single to right field in the top of the fifth inning.

The 'Cats broke into the scoring column in the top of the seventh, when first baseman Bryan Muniz singled, then scored on an RBI double by McCall to right field.

Unfortunately, that was the only run scored by the 'Cats, while the Tigers tacked on three in the bottom of the seventh, and one in the eighth, en route to their second victory in a row.

Tri-City and Connecticut will face off on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., in the final game of the series. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be RHP Trent Thornton (1-0, 0.00), who will be making his first professional start, following two prior appearances out of the bullpen. Getting the start for the Tigers will be RHP Sandy Baez (0-1, 12.00).
