Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - After starting off the season at 5-1 on a six-game road trip, the Doubledays have lost four straight, and all four have been at home. Today's 11-4 loss moves Auburn to 5-5 on the season.
It all started in the first inning when Brooklyn jumpd on the board quickly. Vinny Sienna was the second hitter of the game and singled into right. The second baseman moved to third when Michael Bernal doubled into right. David Thompson stepped up next and drove in Sienna with a sacrifice fly. Michael Katz walked and was later driven in along with Bernal thanks to a single to center from Zach Mathieu.
The Doubledays responded in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. With one out, Dalton Dulin and Matthew Page walked before David Kerian drove them both in. Dulin scored easily on the single, but Page scored on a throwing error by Jeff Diehl.
Joan Baez started the game for Auburn and lasted just the first inning as he was replaced by Mariano Rivera III in the second. Rivera retired the side in order in the second and walked one in the third before he gave up a run on a double and a ground out in the fourth.
In the fifth inning, Brooklyn really broke out the bats and scored five off of Cody Gunter. The fifth inning for the Cyclones was highlighted by three singles and a two-run home run by Michael Bernal, his third of the year.
The Doubledays scratched across two runs in bottom of the fifth thanks to a pair of doubles by Edwin Lora and David Kerian. The doubles knocked Matt Blackham out of the game. The starter for Brooklyn went 4.2 innings and gave up four runs, all earned, on four hits. He also walked four and struck out nine.
In the sixth, Brooklyn added a pair of runs after Bernal and Thompson led off with back-to-back triples. Bernal stepped up to the plate in the seventh a single shy of the first cycle in Cyclones' history, but lined into a double play.
Nobody scored in the seventh, eighth, or ninth as Brooklyn improved to 7-3 on the young season and Auburn dropped to 5-5.
The Doubledays look to avoid the sweep tomorrow night at home. Game time against the Cyclones is set for 7:05 PM.
