Lake Monsters And Lowell Split Doubleheader

BURLINGTON, VT --- Seong-min Kim hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to account for the only run of the game as the Vermont Lake Monsters beat the Lowell Spinners 1-0 in the second game of a New York-Penn League doubleheader Monday night at historic Centennial Field. Lowell had scored four runs in the top the fifth inning of the opener to beat Vermont 5-3.

Kim hit the game-winning homer off Lowell starter Luis Ramos (1-1), who allowed five hits and struckout five in six innings of work. The one-out homer to rightfield was the second of the season for Kim and made a winner of starting pitcher Chris Kohler (1-0), who gave up just two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts (including six straight in the second and third innings).

The Spinners threatened to tie the game in the seventh on a leadoff single, sac bunt and wild pitch, but Michael Fagan struckout Josh Ockimey and got Victor Acosta to ground out to end the game. It was the first save of the season for Fagan.

Vermont had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one on a two-run homer from Chris Iriart and starter Dustin Driver (0-1) held the Spinners hitless over the first four innings, but Lowell scored four times on five hits off Driver in the fifth inning for a 4-2 lead. Acota had an RBI triple in the inning, while Brandon Magee and Luis Alexander Basabe had RBI singles. Ockimey gave Lowell a 5-2 lead in the sixth with the Spinners first home run of the season.

The Lake Monsters got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Steven Pallares sac fly and then loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Edwar Garcia struckout Mikey White to end the game. Dioscar Romero (1-1) allowed two runs four hits with one walk and six strikeouts over five innings to pick up the win for the Spinners.

Vermont (4-6) and Lowell (9-2) will wrap up the three-game series on Tuesday night with former Red Sox great Beernie Carbo wat the ballpark to sign autographs and throw out the first pitch before the 7:05 pm game.
