State College Spikes News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - The State College Spikes saw their winning streak close at three games as they fell to the Staten Island Yankees, 5-1, on Monday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
Leobaldo Pina collected two hits on his 21st birthday to help pace the Spikes' (4-6) offense, but State College left 12 runners on base during the game. Casey Grayson also produced multiple hits for the Spikes.
Staten Island (6-5) took the lead in the third inning as Jeff Hendrix singled, stole second base and scored on Thairo Estrada's double. It was the first time that State College trailed in a game since the finale of the opening homestand on Wednesday.
The Yankees added a run in the seventh when Hendrix walked, stole second, and came home on Brandon Wagner's single. Drew Bridges capped the scoring with a three-run homer down the right field line in the eighth for his second long ball of the series.
State College mounted a comeback effort in the ninth as Craig Aikin delivered a base hit, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Thomas Spitz's single. However, the Spikes would not be able to muster enough to overcome the deficit.
Landon Beck (0-1) took the loss for the Spikes after yielding one run on three hits and a walk over four innings of work. Beck, who was making his second start of the year, struck out two in the effort.
Luke Harrison came on in relief for State College in the fifth and delivered two scoreless frames in his professional debut. The Indiana product gave up a hit, but also struck out the first batter he faced.
Josh Roeder (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Staten Island starter Domingo Acevedo, who logged just three innings on the mound. Roeder gave up just one hit over two shutout innings for the victory. Sean Carley, who recorded the final out of the eighth for the Yankees with runners on second and third, finished the game for his first save of the year. Carley gave up a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one over 1 1/3 innings.
Tuesday, the Spikes finish their six-day road trip with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against the Yankees at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. After a change in the rotation, right-hander Carson Cross (0-0), this year's 14th-round draft choice of the Cardinals out of the University of Connecticut, will get the start for State College in his professional debut. Staten Island will send left-hander Derek Callahan (1-0) to the mound.
Wednesday, the Spikes come back home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park as they start a three-game homestand with a 7:05 p.m. game against the West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates). Fans can enjoy a Half-Price Wednesday, presented by BIG Froggy 101. Outfield Bleacher seats will be available for just $3 apiece, and fans can purchase half-price 16-oz. select domestic draft beers from 6-8 p.m. 16-oz. sodas will also be available at half-price all evening long.

Fans can then bring their dogs to the ballpark for a night of four-legged fun on Thursday, July 2 at the first Bark in the Park Night of the year, presented by Metzger Animal Hospital, Happy 103 and the Centre Daily Times. That night's 7:05 p.m. game also marks the first $1 Beer Thursday of the year, presented by 93.7 THE BUS.
