Scrappers Remain in Rut

Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (3-7) dropped their fifth game in a row on Monday night. They lost 5-2 to the Williamsport Crosscutters (10-0).

Mahoning Valley pitching has pitched well of late, but it cannot get any run support from the Scrapper bats. The offensive highlight in this one for the Scrappers was a double for Mark Mathias, which was part of a two-run bottom of the sixth for the Scrappers.

The scoring started in the top of the second. On the first professional pitch he saw, Josh Tobias sent a Kieran Lovegrove pitch over the right field wall for not only his first home run of his professional career, but the first hit on the first pitch. Williamsport added two more in the top of the fifth. Jan Hernandez, Tobias, and Gregori Rivero all doubled. The Tobias and Rivero doubles scored the previous batter.

Going into the sixth, the Crosscutters led 3-0. They would make it 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth.

Willi Castro led off the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch by Mitch Gueller with Connor Marabell at the plate. Marabell ended up hitting a single to put runners at the corners for Mathias. He ripped a double to the gap in left-center, scoring Castro. Emmanuel Tapia then hit a sacrifice fly to score Marabell.

The offense is slowly making its way back after a home stand with barely any offense. Gueller gets the victory, while Lovegrove takes his first loss of the season. Robert Tasin earned his third save.

Scrappers look to avoid getting swept on this homestand when they take on the Crosscutters again on Tuesday night at 7:05. Shao-Ching Chiang gets the ball for Mahoning Valley against Luis Morales for Williamsport.
