NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (4-6) won back-to-back games for the first time this year as they defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats (5-6) by a final score of 7-1.
The story on this night was Connecticut Tigers starter Chase Edwards. Coming off a start where he really struggled the righty pitched 6.2 innings while allowing just one run on three hits and five strikeouts. Edwards who walked just one delivered the longest outing by a Tiger starter so far this year.
After stranding a runner on third base in the bottom of the first the Tigers struck for three in the bottom of the second against ValleyCats starter Elieser Hernandez. Third basemen Josh Lester doubled to start the frame and moved to third with one out on a single by catcher Will Allen. The two where still at the corners with two outs when center fielder Victor Padron singled to left making it 1-0. The next batter was second basemen Pat Mackenzie and he promptly singled in two runs to push the lead to 3-0 after two innings.
Tri-City broke through with a run in the top of the seventh. With Edwards still on the mound and two outs in the inning first basemen Bryan Muniz singled and scored one batter later when designated hitter Dexture McCall doubled him home making it 3-1. Gerson Moreno entered the game and put out the fire getting the first man he faced.
In the bottom half of the inning Connecticut put the game away. Center fielder Victor Padron singled with one out and moved to second when Mackenzie followed with a single. After a strikeout left fielder Christin Stewart singled in Padron to make it 4-1. Designated hitter Corey Baptist then slammed the door on Tri-City with a two RBI triple extending the lead to 6-1.
Moreno remained on the mound and retired all seven batters he faced. For Moreno it was his first save of the season.
