Staten Island Yankees News Release

After dropping the first three home contests of the season, the Staten Island Yankees (6-5) finally earned a victory at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George against the State College Spikes (4-6), 5-1.

The Baby Bombers scratched across their first run in the bottom of the third inning. Jeff Hendrix singled to right field off State College starter Thomas Spitz, then advanced to second on his first stolen base of the season. Hendrix crossed the plate later in the inning on Thairo Estrada's third double of the season.

The Yankees pitching staff held strong all game long with Domingo Acevedo, Josh Roeder (W, 1-0), Mark Seyler and Michael Schaub combining for 8.1 shutout innings to start the game.

Staten Island added the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jeff Hendrix drew a walk from Spikes reliever Luke Harrison. Hendrix put himself in scoring position with his second stolen base of the season, then scored on a Brandon Wagner single to right field, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Baby Bombers.

Aside from stellar pitching, the highlight of the night came from the bat of Drew Bridges. After a Gordon Griffin double and a Eduardo de Oleo single, Bridges homered for the second straight night, putting Staten Island up, 5-0.

State College did not leave without putting a run on the board. Craig Aikin singled to left field off Staten Island reliever Sean Carley, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Thomas Spitz then brought home the only run of the game on a single to right field.

The Staten Island Yankees wrap up their series with State College Tuesday night at 7 p.m. with DSNY Night, sponsored by Pratt Industries. Free water bottle giveaway to the first 1,500 fans in the ballpark.
