Urena Slams Yard Goats Twice, Homers Three Times, Knocks in 9

HARTFORD- Jhoan Urena slugged three home runs, including two grand slams and knocked in nine runs to lead the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to a 12-2 win over the Hartford Yard Goats Monday night, before 6,850 at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Urena, a switch-hitter, homered from both sides of the plate. He staked the Mets' affiliate to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with a grand slam off of Hartford starter and losing pitcher Frank Duncan and added a solo shot in the third off of Duncan, batting left-handed. He belted his second grand slam and third home run, batting right-handed in the sixth inning off of southpaw reliever Brian Moran.

Urena, 24, continued his assault on Hartford pitching with his big night. Signed as an international free agent by the New York Mets, when he was 17, Urena is hitting .327 with five home runs and 16 RBI against the Yard Goats in 14 games.

The 44th sellout crowd of the season at Dunkin' Donuts Park witnessed Urena's feat. The Yard Goats have had 16 straight sellouts, six straight capacity crowds and have now drawn 388,392, with three home games remaining against Binghamton.

Knuckleball pitcher Mickey Janis (10-6) was the beneficiary of the Binghamton output, notching his 10th win of the season. He pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits, walking four and striking out five. Duncan, who fell to 2-4, gave up 10 runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Drew Weeks' two-run homer and two hits from Brian Mundell provided the Hartford offense, as the Yard Goats (60-70) lost their fourth straight. In addition to Urena's big night, Andres Gimenez had three hits and an RBI, while ex-big league player Joe Terdoslavich added two run-scoring singles for Binghamton (62-71).

Game two of the series is Tuesday night at 7:05. RH Ryan Castellani will pitch for the Yard Goats against RH Franklyn Kilome for Binghamton. The game will be televised on Vantage Sportsnet, broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio1410.iheart.com and MiLB.com.
