Harrisburg Senators News Release
The Harrisburg Senators defeated the Erie SeaWolves 5-3 Monday night at FNB Field. Taylor Gushue knocked the go-ahead two-run double in the sixth to put the Senators ahead for good.
Alec Keller and Carter Kieboom hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the first which put the Senators ahead 1-0. Austin Davidson launched a home run to right in the second to double the Senators lead to 2-0.
Erie scored a run in the third and another pair in the fifth when Will Maddox singled in two runs as they took a 3-2 lead.
The Senators responded in the sixth. After there were two out and nobody on base, Jake Noll and Dan Gamache hit consecutive singles. That brought up Taylor Gushue, who roped a double into right center field to score both runners and give the Senators a 4-3 lead.
"He's been in a funny situation this year where he was playing every day, and then (Raudy Read) came back and took over as the starter," Senators manager Matt LeCroy said. "(Taylor) has continued to work hard. He's done a nice job the last two days and hopefully when he gets his opportunities he'll continue to do well."
After the club tacked on a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Kieboom, Ronald Pena entered the game in the ninth to try to seal the win. He allowed the first two batters to reach on a walk and a single, however he retired the next three SeaWolves to notch his fifth save and finish the 5-3 Senators victory.
Senators starting pitcher Jaron Long (5-8) earned the win after allowing eight hits and three runs across five and two-thirds innings.
"(Long) knows how to pitch. He can slow it down and he knows what he's trying to do each pitch," LeCroy said. "He has been a true pro here. He's a guy that has had to come back to Double-A when he probably should be at Triple-A. That's makeup and that's the mental toughness it takes to play baseball. Our team wouldn't be here without people like (Long)."
SeaWolves reliever Trent Szkutnik (3-2) took the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits in one-third of an inning.
Keller, Kieboom and Davidson all finished with two hits, while Kieboom and Gushue paced the Senators with a pair of RBI.
"We're going to finish and we're going to go to the end. We're professionals and get paid to compete every day," LeCroy said. "We're not going to give anything away. Hopefully we'll continue to do well and finish up on a good note."
The Senators and SeaWolves continue their series Tuesday night. Sterling Sharp starts for the senators against Erie starter Beau Burrows. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at FNB Field. The game can be heard on CBS Sports Harrisburg 96.5 & 95.3 FM and 1400 AM or at www.cbssportsharrisburg.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.
