NORFOLK, Va. - Tanner Jeannot notched two goals and the Florida Everblades scored twice in each of the first two periods to coast to a 5-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday night at the Norfolk Scope.
Down by a goal in the first three minutes of the first period for the second straight night, Florida (2-0-0, 4 pts.) netted key goals in the last 30 seconds of the first and second periods to aid in the sweep of the Admirals (0-2-0, 0 pts.).
After Alex Rodriguez started the scoring only 2:24 into the game for Norfolk, Florida, as it had done on Friday, responded to take a lead into the first intermission. Jeannot factored into a first period goal for the second straight night, as he hammered a one-time pass from Justin Auger past Norfolk goaltender Brandon Halverson with 5:02 left in the first for Florida's first power-play goal of the season.
Florida then wrested the lead from Norfolk with a tally late in the opening frame. Logan Roe found himself in space at the left point and skated patiently down the inside of the left circle before releasing a feed to Zach Magwood in the slot. Magwood jammed in the pass to make it 2-1 with only 20 seconds left in the first.
Florida tacked on two more goals in the second period to open the lead to three. Blake Winiecki found twine for the second time in the series, tapping a loose puck past Halverson at the left post with 9:52 gone in the second period. Auger followed suit with his second goal of the weekend, a redirect of Cam Maclise's initial shot with only 30 seconds to play in the frame.
The Admirals climbed within two on a power-play goal only 33 seconds into the third, but Jeannot struck for his second of the game with 9:53 left in regulation to help seal the victory.
Making his Everblades debut, Cam Johnson turned away 19 of the 21 shots he faced to earn the win. Halverson was tagged with five goals on 30 shots and suffered his second straight loss for Norfolk.
