Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves started the 2011 campaign off with a bang as they took down the Altoona Curve, 3-2 in dramatic fashion on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park.

The SeaWolves broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth against Curve starter Bryan Morris. With one out, Deik Scram drew a four-pitch walk bringing Ben Guez to the plate. Guez, who struck out in his first at-bat, turned on a Morris fastball and slammed a two-run home run to the left-field power alley for a 2-0 lead.

Erie starter Jacob Turner held the Curve in check, allowing just two hits over the first six innings, but did not factor in the decision.

The lead held until the top of the eighth when the Erie bullpen faltered. Reliever Matt Hoffman walked back-to-back hitters in Brock Holt and Starling Marte putting the tying runs on base. A Jordy Mercer sacrifice bunt pushed the runners into scoring position. With runners on second and third, Lester Oliveros walked Tony Sanchez, loading the bases. After Oliveros struck out Miles Durham, Quincy Latimore followed with his second double of the game, plating the tying runs.

In the bottom of the ninth with one out, Michael Bertram singled to right, putting the winning run on base. Pinch runner Justin Henry then stole second and moved to third on a Francisco Martinez groundout. With two down, Brian Holaday jumped on the first pitch he saw from reliever Michael Dubee and singled to left, scoring Henry, giving Erie a 3-2 win.

Turner got the no-decision, finishing his night with nine strikeouts and only one walk. The righty retired the final nine batters he faced and both hits he allowed came in the second inning.

Oliveros (1-0) earned the win.

The SeaWolves continue the four-game series with the Curve on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park...6:35 First Pitch. The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free magnetic schedule courtesy of Delta Sonic.
