Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Josh Stinson set the tone with five, scoreless innings and Lorenzo Scott scored the game's only run on a wild pitch to send Binghamton past Akron 1-0 Thursday at Canal Park. Stinson allowed just two hits and induced nine groundball outs to record his first win of 2011. The B-Mets are now 13-7 in season-opening games and have won seven straight over the Aeros at Canal Park dating back to 2010.

Stinson and Akron (0-1) starter Kelvin De La Cruz threw up dueling zeroes in the first two innings. De La Cruz, however, suffered a hiccup in his command in the third leading to Binghamton's lone run. Scott walked on four pitches to start the inning. He promptly stole second and took third on Jordany Valdespin's groundout. With Josh Satin at the plate, the southpaw starter fired a slider in the dirt that got away from catcher Chun Chen, allowing Scott to score the decisive run.

De La Cruz proved stingy from that point on, retiring seven of the last eight men he faced. He allowed just one hit over five innings, but was hung with the loss.

Binghamton (1-0) gave no ground the remainder of the way. Ricky Brooks followed Stinson and retired all five batters he faced. Roy Merritt allowed a pair of hits over two-thirds of an inning before passing the ball to John Lujan. The hard-throwing righty took it the final 1 2/3 innings to nail down his first save of the season. Lujan capped the shutout with a strikeout of Aeros rightfielder John Drennen.

The B-Mets were limited to just three hits. Jose Coronado singled in the second inning off De La Cruz, which proved to be the team's lone hit until Satin singled off reliever Matt Langwell in the ninth. Brahiam Maldonado added a double in the same frame.

Grady Sizemore, on rehab assignment from Cleveland, went 1-3 with a single for Akron. Former B-Mets reliever Joe Smith, also on rehab from Cleveland, tossed a scoreless sixth inning for the Aeros.

LHP Mark Cohoon (0-0, 0.00) will take the ball for the B-Mets Friday in the second game of the four-game set and will be opposed by RHP Joe Gardner (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
