State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Jacob Evans, Max Almonte and Steven De La Cruz teamed up to shut the Williamsport Crosscutters out on four hits, and the State College Spikes gained a game on the Crosscutters in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division standings with a 5-0 win on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Spikes also increased their lead over Lowell in the NYPL Wild Card standings to 1 ½ games with the victory.
Evans (3-1) earned the win for the second straight start after allowing just two hits and facing the minimum over five innings of work. The left-hander from Oklahoma needed just 55 pitches to get through his outing, and has not yet allowed an earned run in 15 innings as a starting pitcher. Evans also matched a career high in strikeouts with five on the night.
Almonte then followed by yielding just one hit, which was erased on a double play ball, and striking out one over two innings. De La Cruz finished the evening with a pair of one-hit innings while also striking out five batters in the process.
The Spikes (31-25) jumped on the Crosscutters (35-22) early, taking the lead in the opening frame on Casey Grayson's RBI single. Grayson, who was one of five Spikes returning to the club from Tuesday's NYPL All-Star Game, also added a double in the game.
State College added two runs in the second, with back-to-back doubles from Orlando Olivera and Jose Godoy plating the first run, and a sacrifice fly by Cole Lankford scoring the other.
After a 34-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fifth inning, the second of the game, Jhohan Acevedo smashed a bases-loaded double to left-center field to score two runs and increase the Spikes' lead to 5-0.
Mike Pritchard collected two hits and swiped two bases, while Olivera and Ronnierd Garcia also provided multi-hit games.
Williamsport starter Tyler Gilbert (3-3) took the loss after yielding three runs on seven hits over four innings. Gilbert struck out two batters in the effort.
Carlos Duran was the only Crosscutter with two hits as Williamsport advanced a runner past first just once in the game.
The game was delayed 18 minutes at the outset as a precautionary measure against threatening weather in the area.
State College now looks to cut down their Pinckney Division deficit even more in a 7:05 p.m. matchup against Wiliamsport at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Thursday night. The Spikes are slated to send right-hander Jorge Rodriguez (4-2), holder of the second-best ERA in the New York-Penn League with a 2.61 mark, to the hill. Right-hander Jose Taveras (5-2) is scheduled to make the start for the Crosscutters.
